Dr Who & the Daleks

A few weeks ago, I saw an episode of Dr Who on the SciFi Channel. In this episode was featured a version of the old The Weakest Link game show.
You may remember the show? Lean, red head, glasses, ascerbic with? It was a show that made you think--quickly. Well, on Dr Who, it was no different. Okay, well, maybe it was a little different. Anne Robertson's part was portrayed by a red-headed android and if the answer was wrong, the contestant was blasted with a laser.

Ahem, not a game I'd want to play.

The reason I bring this up is that in the past, if my favorite shows used a ploy like this (dragging a cultural icon in) it would be to boost ratings. It rarely worked. Indeed, it was often the harbinger of a series finale. The writers of Dr Who don't appear worried and they shouldn't be--this time. That episode was as fresh and innovative as all the others.

I will, however, worry when I see an android chef imitating Gordon Ramsey of Hell's Kitchen. Any contestant on that show needs a 'time machine' so they can go back and prevent themselves from the abuse which is not witty, just nasty.

I really got into Dr. Who this year. Never watched any of the old incarnations - I love Billie Piper as Rose - and I loved the season finale - but what I way to end a promising 'ship.'

The "Ann" Droid did freak me out a bit. "YouaretheweakestlinkgoodBYE!"zap. That's the stuff of nightmares!

Same here, Jennifer. I never really got into the other Dr Who's but this one has slowly grown on me (I first viewed it as a poor substitute for Battlestar Galactica) And that season finale was kind of surprising, wasn't it? Now I have to watch when it comes back (g)

I grew up watching Doctor Who. In Australia it was on the ABC, 6.30pm to 6.55pm Monday-Thursday, so a whole episode was shown over the four days. I think this schedule was pretty much engraved in stone for at least 10 years. From Jon Pertwee (who was The Doctor in the mid-70s) I think I watched all of them. It's worth it just to see Tom Baker in action - he's considered the best Doctor, the one the new actors have to live up to. OK, you can tell I'm a big fan!

The great thing about Doctor Who is that most of it is done tongue-in-cheek, and a lot of it is a sly satire on current events and social attitudes. Definitely not to be taken seriously!

Yes and I love that tongue in cheek, sly satire (g).
