PROMO- The Highs & Lows

PROMO - ah yes, gone are the days when you could write a book and the publisher would do everything else for you. Nowadays, writing the book is just the beginning. You're also your own PR.

Two things are important for promo - namely, money and time. And who has much of either, I ask you?! Not yours truly, but I do my best with what I have got.

TIME: I had good intentions of doing a chat every month on a different loop each time. I don't know what happened to that good intention. It probably disappeared along with my time and money *guffaw*. Seriously, I did have the intentions as part of my plan, but...

Okay, I would say, for anyone doing promo, that one of the biggest draws you can have is the guest chat sessions on different readers loops, such as ebooklovers, loversofromancecafe, joyfully reviewed, etc. Being a guest means you get to chat to readers and other authors about your books, how you do things, yourself, etc. And it's always fun to have fun with others! I always have a great time when I do a chat. It's so important to have fun and enjoy yourself, and you can learn so much from readers.

Other Promo ways are the good ol' website and joining with other authors for blogs (such as here with these wonderful girls, because I'd be hopeless if I had to blog every day on my own), and of course the newsletter, always a bonus. Sometimes you can have joint share of a website with other authors as well, such as Books We Love, which also run great contests. And don't forget all those wonderful review sites out there!

MONEY: - okay, believe it or not, this is a biggie for authors. We need promo items such as postcards, magnets, etc. I've found the best place for this to be vista print, as they often have freebies, and a nice assortment of promo gear, too. Then there's free books for contests, be it trade paperback or ebook. Websites also cost money, as does the internet. And some review sites will only accept print books.

To be honest, I wish I had more time to promo the way I need to. I need to get onto chats more, I need to send out more promo gear, but I lack the time and money to do what I really need to. Just having more time would help me heaps! If I had more time, I could do more chats. As it is, sometimes I struggle to get proper writing time. Working full time makes things just a wee bit harder (but it pays the vet bills and keeps us fed and clothed )

Blah blah blah - same old story! And you know what? Author, singer, worker, pensioner, whoever - we all seem to suffer from lack of time and money!

But we never lack in spirit

cheers!
Angela

Angela, ain't it the truth! Money and time.
I might attempt an author's chat one of these days...maybe. I'm not all that chatty!
Now blogs and when a chat loop hosts one of my publishers, that I can do.
Except when locked into edits. Then it's into the don't bother me cave.

So true Angela!

There are days where I wondered where did my time and money go!

I do love the idea of an online book tour:0) I think that would be fun, though a lot of work. Still with a backlist like yours hooking new readers attention would be worth it.
