Guest - Kendra Leigh Castle

Good morning, all! Today's guest is Kendra Castle Leigh, one of my favorite new authors...although newer might be a better word :-) Ms Leigh first caught my attention when she wrote for Sourcebooks. I fell in love with her writing style, her voice, her imagination and her characters. Make sure you catch the review I did for her newest book, Renegade Angel...then go buy it!

Kendra Leigh Castle spent her youth stealing her mom's romance novels, and now indulges her fascination with paranormal bad boys by writng her own.  She lives in Maryland with her family, and is the author of the acclaimed MacInnes Werewolves trilogy, Renegade Angel, out now from Harlequin Nocturne, and a new series coming from Grand Central Publishing about the ancient vampire dynasties that rule the night, beginning next summer with Dark Awakening.  Visit her online at www.kendraleighcastle.com!

Bad to the Bone

What is it about bad boys?  I don’t know about you, but I’ve always loved them, at least in theory.  From Sexy Severus and Luscious Lucius (stop looking at me that way, I didn’t make those names up!) of Harry Potter fame, to the tortured Phantom of the Opera, to the original Bad Vamp, Count Dracula, men with a dark and dangerous streak have always gotten my motor running.  Okay, so the one or two I dated in real life didn’t work out so well.  But in the realm of paranormal romance, bad boys tend to make the most excellent mates.  And in my new book Renegade Angel, out this month from Nocturne, the hero Raum is one of the original bad boys: a fallen angel.

When a new story idea shows up on my mental doorstep, it usually arrives in the form of the hero.  Renegade Angel was no exception…and would you be able to ignore a guy who looked like this, except with the addition of a pair of big, black wings?

Yeah, me neither.  And so Raum was born, ebony-haired, green-eyed, and with enough attitude to take on the world.  Or just survive working for a bunch of control-freak white wings he used to have the misfortune of knowing back in his better-behaved days.  See, Raum managed to make the wrong enemy in Hell when he was solidifying his reputation as the Destroyer of Dignities and Robber of Kings.  That enemy bided his time, got on Hell’s Infernal Council by sucking up to Lucifer, and eventually, Raum was marked for death on trumped up charges of being a traitor.  He was out of options until Leviathan, Hell’s sometimes-man, sometimes-sea monster, showed up with an offer he was pretty sure Raum wouldn’t refuse.

That’s how Raum ended up freelancing for Heaven, taking care of earth’s pesky half-demon problem so the angels have more time to concentrate on the rapidly slipping balance between darkness and light.  It pays well, but the company of a few fellow Fallen outcasts doesn’t exactly brighten Raum’s days.  Then he ends up in a little Vermont town, on what he assumes is just another mission to find and exterminate another psychotic human/demon hybrid (they do tend to turn out that way), and finds himself saddled with the mysterious and tantalizing puzzle that is Ember Riddick, the flame-haired proprietress of Lotions & Potions.  And the rest…well, the rest you’ll need to read and find out for yourself!  But Ember is far from psychotic.  And she’s also a great deal more than she seems.

Raum is different than any other hero I’ve written.  He’s unapologetically bad to the bone, with a sharp tongue and plenty of anger management issues.  He doesn’t particularly miss Heaven, though he’s gotten pretty sick of Hell, too.  And when he meets Ember for the first time, he has no idea what hit him.  Watching this particular bad boy remember what it is to love and be loved was such a treat for me, and I hope everyone who picks up the book enjoys reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.  If nothing else, enjoy picturing the Guyliner God there, except with wings, while reading the story!

So here’s my question for you: who’s your favorite bad boy in film or fiction?

Leave your answer in the comments AND email it to me with your snail mail addy. I’ll select my favorite answer and send you a copy of Renegade Angel, signed by me.  The contest will run until Tuesday and I'll announce the winner then!  Meanwhile I’ll be in and out every day to discuss my favorite subject…dark, sexy, world-wreckingly powerful men!

Email your answer to kendraleighcastle@yahoo.com

Renegade Angel

It's been thousands of years since Raum's angelic wings turned from white to black, and the Destroyer of Dignities and Robber of Kings never looked back. These days he's also on the outs with Hell and works with a motley crew of ex-demons on a new mission: snuffing out lesser demons and their half-human progeny.

Raum's latest assignment brings him to a small Vermont town—and a sweet, funny half-demon, half-human he'll risk everything to save. Ember Riddick stirs him as no woman ever before—and she holds the key to what Lucifer will move Hell and Earth to prevent: his team's redemption.

But Ember's secrets are as dark as Raum's midnight wings. And their fate may leave them entwined…but destroyed….

I've read Angel and love it. I wish there would be more books along this line. There was more than one Renagade Angel in the original story and I would love to read about the others stories as well. Hint! Hint! Nocturne!

Jessica, I totally agree! The other fallen angels and Leviathan and Justinian absolutely need their stories told.

Hello? Nocturne? Can you hear us?

Wow. This sounds great, gotta love an unapologetic bad boy fallen angel. Sheesh. And I agree that dating them in real life (bad boys, not fallen angels) isn't that great -- or, doesn't end well -- I still can't get enough of them in romance.

Oh those bad boys! I do think the appeal for readers is the hope of redeeming them. In fiction, it is possible, in real life, well, as you said, that doesn't go as well. LOL!

favorite bad boy, since its early on Monday, I'll say Han Solo. My brain can't handle a deeper search right now. LOL!

I got all verklempt about fallen angels and such and forgot to answer the question!

Calder Hart, from Brenda Joyce's "Deadly" series. He owns the page, tramples the heroine's heart, and never explains himself.

Zsadist, J.R. Ward's tortured "Black Dagger Brotherhood" dark hero. He punishes himself as much as he punishes everyone around him.

*sigh*

Morning, ladies! Oh, I would love to write more fallen angels. I'll see what I can do! I promise, though, the werewolves I'm doing next for Nocturne will be fun:-) And the cat shifting vampire I'm doing for Grand Central is very much a bad boy. I lurve him.

Jessica and Lynda, you guys are awesome. Thank you! And maybe you'll get your wish! I do agree, those stories need to be told.

Amy, LOL, don't you wish that fictional bad boys and real life ones had a little more in common? The real ones are usually just jerks. *sigh* Well, that's what romance is for. Niiiice choices for your fave bad boys!

Pauline, I'm a sucker for redemption stories, which is probably why I was drawn to fallen angels. And I LOVE Han Solo! He's a great bad boy turned hero!

I loved this book and loved Raum bad attitude. I kept saying to myself. Raum, watch the Tude man.
But if I was to pick a favorite Bad Boy. I guess I have to say on film it's The Phantom in the Phantom of the Opera. Gerry Butler played it so well. Snarky as all hell. The best Scene was down in the dungeon with the mask off. And all his emotions exposed.
And oh yes, Sir Guy in Robin Hood. Richard Armitage by a mile.

Kendra,
Your book sounds fabulous! I think my favorite bad boy is Methos from TV's Highlander.

Not only was he one of the Four Horsemen, but he was also unapologetically out for number one. He might not take the head of every immortal he met, but if it came to a choice between you or him, it would definitely be him.

And at the end of the day, I bet he could tell some great bedtime stories.

I had some honorable mentions including -
Movies: Gerard Butler's Phantom, Gerard Butler's Atilla, Mel Gibson's Mad Max, and Mickey Rourke in almost any of his earlier roles (Nine 1/2 Weeks, Angel Heart, Harley DAvidson and the Marlboro Man, Wild Orchid)
Books: Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights and Rochester from Jane Eyre.
But the winner is Jim Caviezel as The Count of Monte Cristo. Love, heartbreak, betrayal, revenge, redemption and love again - seriously, what's not to love about this guy!

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

Hey Donna! Oh, Gerry as the Phantom was fabulous. Point of No Return...and his lament from the top of the angel...Christine, WHAT were you thinking?! And you know how I feel about Richard:-)

Hi Keena! Ooh, Methos. My kind of man. I miss Highlander!

Hi Clancy! Nice list...big thuumbs up from me. And Caviezel was so intense in that flick, I love it!

Yum bad boys. I'm quite fond of Severus and the Phantom, although I'm more of a Draco fan than a Lucius fan. Some of my other favorite bad boys are Grima Wormtongue from the Lord of the Rings movies (the book version is not so hot), Tomo and Nakago from the anime Fushigi Yuugi, Saionji from the anime Utena, the Joker from the animated Batman series, and Starscream from various Transformers series. I'm not sure Jareth in the movie Labyrinth would count as a bad boy, but if so then him too. I don't think I could possibly pick one of those as my favorite though...

Hey Kendra, Bad Boys...what would we do without them in the paranormal world? My list is too long. There are just too many fictional bad boys. And if I were to be honest with myself, while I'm reading a book, I fall madly in love with the characters I'm reading about-so much so sometimes that I'm actually a little depressed when the books ends. Especially in a series when you've waited a year for the next installment and read the book in a matter of hours!

You already know I loved RA and would love to see more of these angels. Maybe we have to start a campaign and hound Nocturne with emails fan letters. :)

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

Hi sunandshadow! Severus is really my favorite...so complicated and dark and sexy! But I always had a thing for Jareth. Actually, I have a picture of him tacked up on my bulletin board, LOL:-)

Hey Lisa! I know what you mean, I'm always bummed when I finish a book I've been waiting for. I read too fast! I love that you all are so into the fallen angels...makes me feel like I really brought them to life:-)

Kendra Leigh Castle said...

And the winner is...Keena! I love that you picked Methos. I had totally forgotten about that character, and he's SUCH a good one! I will get your book out to you within the week. Congrats, and thanks to everyone for coming by!
