10 Things I Love About the Etruscans

I’m a bit of a research geek so, when I chose the Etruscans as the basis for a secret magical community, I ordered every book I could find on Amazon that dealt with Etruscan life. Here are just a few things I discovered that I used to create my stories.

10. Etruscan scholars can’t agree on where the Etruscans came from originally. Historically, they appear around 700 BC in the area now known as Tuscany in Italy. For me as a writer, this was a golden opportunity to create a mysterious race of people out of the mists of time that still had a basis in history.

9. Their language has yet to be fully translated because there aren’t that many examples remaining.  No one really knows why all the texts are missing. And it was a language unlike others spoken in Italy at the time. How cool is that? Not only do scholars not know where the Etruscans originated but they also can’t translate much of the little text they left behind. So far we’ve got mysterious origins and cryptic writings. Win!

8. The Etruscans made gorgeous jewelry. Some of their techniques are unable to be duplicated even today. And they were brilliant artists. They worked in gold, silver, and amber and produced bracelets earrings, pins and necklaces without rival.

7. Rituals, curses and spells were used in everyday life. Noble children wore gold capsules around their necks as charms to ward off evil. Curses have been found inscribed on lead tablets. What paranormal writer wouldn’t be able to come up with loads of material from this?

6. The Etruscans had priests called haruspices who read sheep entrails and watched the skies for signs, particularly, the flight and behaviors of birds, as messages from the deities. Blood-thirsty and strange.

5. They had blue underworld demons, some with claws and fangs. Etruscan artists drew pictures of them on their tomb walls. Perfect villains for paranormal romance, don’t you think?

4. Their goddesses almost always are depicted with red shoes. Why? Hell if I know. But it’s these tiny pieces of information that, when you build on them, make your imaginary world richer.

3. They definitely weren’t prudes. There’s lot of nudes in Etruscan art, both men and women. Beautifully rendered, not crude caricatures, like the Greeks produced.

2. Etruscan goddesses had a much wider range of duties and responsibilities than the Greeks. Where the Greeks were typically petty and vindictive, the Etruscans had a more balanced reaction to most things. Since the Romans assimilated many of the Etruscan deities into their mythology, Roman goddesses have a much wider range of duties than the Greeks.

1. Unlike the Greeks and, later, the Romans, Etruscans women were held in high regard by the men. Their opinions were valued. In artwork, they’re shown in the same scenes as men at banquets and sporting events. You don’t find that in Greek and Roman art. Greeks historians occasionally made rude comments about how Etruscan women were allowed to speak their mind. The Etruscans were way ahead of their time. Huge point in their favor.
