Review - Rogue Oracle

Rogue Oracle
Alayna Williams
Pocket Books
March 2011

Criminal profiler, Tara Sheridan, uses some unorthodox techniques—Tarot and an innate intuition—to perform her job. But her new assignment will need that and every other skill and intuitional gift she has. She joins forces with her friend and sometime lover, Agent Harry Li, to track down a group of missing former spies.

These people were all linked to a top-secret operation tracking the disposal of nuclear weapons in Russia. With no bodies or clues to identify what happened to these missing operatives, Harry uses standard investigation techniques while Tara falls back on her evolving intuitional gifts.

While Tara sorts through her feelings for Harry, her concern for Cassie, a young woman she’s taken under her wing and her relationship with the mysterious group known as Delphi’s Daughters, the villain grows more monstrous by the minute.  Tara and Harry have to work fast if they’re to stop him from his ultimate destructive goal.

I’m always drawn to books with well developed characters and a plot that I can’t forecast each twist and turn so I’m doubly drawn to writers like Alayna Williams. Add a good helping of suspense…and you have the best of all things. This book is labeled as an Urban Fantasy, which it is, but you won’t find the standard elves or vamps or shapeshifters.

No, you’ll find a villain reminiscent of The Thing, one of the best Science Fiction/horror stories of all time. Except in Rogue Oracle, you’ll get into the head of the villain, Galen. And, in some ways, you’ll sympathize with him even while you’re yelling at his victims to run. But that’s not all.

That’s not even half of it. The plot is quick paced and grabs you right from the moment you open the book. There is enough suspense to keep you turning the pages even when you know you should be turning the light off and going to bed. Ms. Williams also does a marvelous job with all her characters. You can feel Tara’s remembered terror from a knife attack (in a previous book, Dark Oracle) and her antipathy toward the group she’s loosely affiliated with, Delphi’s Daughters. You can feel Harry’s frustration at what he perceives is his failure to accomplish his job and his fear of losing what he has with Tara.

No, this isn’t a Romance but it has definite Romantic Elements. I intend to get the first book in this series (Dark Oracle) because I want to know where these two characters started but not because it’s necessary to read first. This book stands alone quite nicely.

I definitely recommend Rogue Oracle and I'll probably recommend Dark Oracle too.
