Good morning! Come in and make yourself comfortable. We have a lovely flavored tea today - Caramel Toffee! Can you smell it? There's sugar or honey if you want it but I find it tasty without. There's scones and Devonshire cream to go with. It's all good!

What’s In A World?

Worldbuilding is one of my favorite aspects of writing urban fantasy and paranormal romance. My brain enjoys taking the real world and twisting it like salt water taffy, molding it into the perfect playground for my characters.

Since I write “urban,” I tend to preserve the current cultural, societal and political norms of our reality and then layer in the “fantasy” via the paranormal inhabitants. I decide whether my creatures are: hidden or out, in positions of power or imprisoned or pursued, good guys or bad guys or both, and so on, etc. In my upcoming release HAVEN, my characters--vampires--are hiding in plain sight and using their power to manipulate mainstream society and maintain their secrecy. Many humans know of their existence but it’s a don’t-ask-don’t-tell situation. Unless you want your throat ripped out. Or your mind/memory tweaked. The vamps are cranky like that.

My fantasy worlds remain fairly faithful to a realistic setting. Many of my stories take place in my hometown of San Francisco. I usually like to preserve the basic geography and beauty of my city and add new venues, such as my heroine’s dance club in HAVEN. I plopped it in the Castro neighborhood, near the famous landmark, Castro Theater. In reality, there’s a bank on the corner where my club stands. :-)

And then there’s fun with physics! So long real world science, say hello to my powerful friend, Magic. You knew that was coming, right? In a world where preternatural creatures like vampires and werewolves, and enhanced humans like witches, wizards, and psychics exist alongside your everyday, average Jane and Joe humans, otherworldly powers reign supreme. In HAVEN, I have witches and wizards working for both Team Good and Team Evil. Team Good also has a psychic. Vampires, too, fight for both teams. All my vamps have a basic set of vampire mojo while some of the older ones possess additional abilities. Bottom line: magic makes magic happen on the page. Toss in a tablespoon of prophecies plus a pinch of impending apocalypse and voila! Good times.  :-)

How about you, dear readers - what kind of fantasy world moves you? High fantasy, sci-fi fantasy, urban fantasy, or...? Thanks for visiting! *waves*

HAVEN
San Francisco nightclub owner Carina Tranquilli works hard, plays hard, and never allows the death of her parents and her twelve-year memory gap to get her down. But her life takes a left turn when a witch attacks her on her twenty-fifth birthday.

Three hauntingly familiar vampires emerge to reveal she possesses a latent power. To protect her from their enemies, they admit to wiping her memories clean and abandoning her as a child, but now they need her help. As she struggles to evade her new protectors and even newer enemies, she meets Alexander, an enigmatic, undead musician. Insta-lust flares, leaving her wanting more.

With evil’s minions hounding her every move, and everything she thought she knew turned on its head, Carina must harness her burgeoning power, unravel her vampire family’s web of deceit, and fight to have a love life...without getting killed in the process

Hi Celia! Thanks for visiting us today. World building is one of my favorite writer jobs! When I was working on Altered Destiny, I spent weeks trawling the Internet and library. It was such fun that I almost forgot that I was WRITING A NOVEL, lol. Yes, I get sucked in to research and world building easily.

Thanks again for being with us today!

It helps to base a world on places we know. It keeps us grounded when adding "the magic", and not get bogged down with details that don't move the story. Good article, Celia.

Celia,
Your world building skills are popping awesome ideas in my brain. I'm with D.T. - I like writing and reading worlds that feel familiar to me, yet have the magic twists embedded.
Good luck with Haven!
