Have you’ve ever had a submission package rejected and honestly not known why? If your query letter, synopsis, and manuscript were polished and in really excellent shape, the culprit could be your formatting, not your story. Is formatting really that important, you ask. As an editor, I can tell you it is that important. In a normal week, editors and agents get hundreds if not thousands of manuscripts to slog through. Bad formatting makes them harder to read, which means it takes us longer. If the formatting makes your submission package too difficult to read, most editors and agents will simply reject it and move on to the next submission package in line. Many a good story has been rejected, not because it wouldn’t sell, but because the formatting made it too much trouble to read. Don’t let this happen to your story. Learn how to turn in a professional submission package that will showcase your work in the best light. In this class, we will discuss how to interpret a publisher’s submission guidelines, the dos and don’ts of basic formatting as well as the not-so-basic formatting, what you should and shouldn’t include in your submission package, and much more.
