What could be more kick-ass than a cigar-chompin', hard drinkin', tough talkin' fighter pilot who can gamble away a week's pay and win it back with a smile, sweet talk the opposite sex and still blow the bad guys out of the sky without an ounce of remorse?

You remember him, don't you?

Oh, wait a minute - this week's topic is about heroines. Sorry.

Time to switch gears.

There. That's better. Same character. Different chromosomes.

When the producers of the new Battlestar Galactica decided to make Starbuck - the quintessential ladies man, lothario, a dreamy sigh in tight pants fighter pilot - into a woman, science fiction fans all over the universe gasped in horror.

How was that going to work? Could a woman really step into those knee high boots and pull off the swagger and bravado perfected by Dirk Benedict in the '70s?

Pfft. Piece of cake.

It's interesting to see how well the experiment worked. Who would have thought a woman could be as tough - oh, wait a minute - as tough? Have you seen Starbuck in action? She would chew Dirk's character up and spit him out. Let's amend that - who would have thought a woman could be...like ten times tougher than a man??

Oh, well, just about any woman who ever lived. Let's face it, women in general kick ass. Don't we? As the saying goes, we can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan. The new [and improved] Starbuck just proves that kick ass heroines are quite common in this and any other universe. I'm sure you know of one or two. Let's hear about them.

Count me in the minority, but I don't like the female Starbuck. She could be an awesome, kickass heroine but here's the thing: I don't like her (not sure if the fault lies with the actress or the character).

Maybe that's part of her appeal to a lot of people. She can be unapologetically unlikable at times - something women are not supposed to be. The woman who is not the nurturer, or the soft balm to the man's hardened temper is considered a 'biotch' because we're supposed to kick a$$ more subtly than men do, and Starbuck is anything but subtle.

yeah, that or the fact I had SUCH a huge crush on the original Starbuck ;-)

LOL! Hey, who didn't? At the time, he was the definition of HAWT.

Amen, ladies. The old Starbuck was most definitely HAWT and when I first heard that the role was reprised for a female Starbuck...well, I didn't gasp in horror but I did shake my head sadly because I was sure the show would bomb if it was going to take that kind of liberty.

Ahem. I was...mistaken. Sort of, lol. Because this Battlestar Galactica is so far removed from the old one there really is no comparison. And with that in mind, a female Starbuck who has brass cajones just like her old namesake has just made the show that much better.

She's a gutsy gal who doesn't give an inch except a few times when she's squared off with Adama and you have to respect that. She's no eye candy (I still really, really like Dirk's Starbuck, lol) but she's pure fire and audacious energy.

It does still amaze me the evolution this show went through from fun and cheesy sci-fi to hard-bitten emotional drama. Who would have thought?

While I had an eye of feminine approval and the ooooh..a heart tingle for the original Starbuck, I like the idea of a female Starbuck. It's about time. And why can't we have both? What can't be a woman's universe and man's universe when it comes to kick-ass or swagger and bravado?

I saw Battlestar Galactica too late to know much about it, but I remember seeing that gutsy female Starbuck. Man, she was a real kick arse heroine!
