Good morning everyone! Today's guest, author Barbara Monajem, wrote her first story in third grade about apple tree gnomes. After dabbling in neighborhood musicals and teen melodrama, she published a middle-grade fantasy when her children were young. Now her kids are adults, and she writes paranormal and historical romance for grownups. She lives in Georgia with an ever-shifting population of relatives, friends, and feline strays.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The world we live in is pretty fabulous as is, but adding the paranormal makes it even more fun. One of the great pleasures of writing paranormal characters is imagining the advantages and disadvantages that would arise from having extraordinary abilities in an ordinary world. Ophelia Beliveau, the heroine of Sunrise in a Garden of Love & Evil, is a hereditary vampire. She has fangs and is sexually irresistible.
Those are the disadvantages.
No, I’m not kidding!
It’s one thing to be attractive. It’s another to be hit on constantly and pursued by obsessive boyfriends who just can’t let go. As for the fangs… sure, they’re an added perk during sex (for both the biter and the bitten), but what if the fangs scare a desirable man away? There are jealous wives and girlfriends to contend with, too.
On the other hand, Ophelia’s a lot stronger than ordinary women, and she has enhanced senses – night vision, extra-sensitive hearing, and a fabulous sense of smell – particularly when it comes to delicious male pheromones...and of course blood.
I love to believe in the almost possible – like Ophelia, for example. There are real people with incredible sexual magnetism. Some people have sharper senses than others. Why shouldn’t they come in a genetic package that gives them fangs as well? What if people who are good at being unnoticed could literally fade into the background? Jack Tallis, the hero of my September release, Tastes of Love & Evil, can do just that. There are plenty of opportunities to do good with that talent...or bad. (But Jack is good. He’s a hero, so he has no choice.)
The hero of the third novel in the Bayou Gavotte series (which I’m working on now) has dangerous telepathic abilities. I love all this stuff. It’s close to reality (well, close enough to have fun with, anyway), but with endless possibilities and consequences.

it IS fun to play "what if." I remember back in the 80's reading THE MEMOIRS OF THE INVISIBLE MAN. I could tell he'd really thought about what it would be like to BE invisible.
And its fun to wish for powers! Hmmm, what power would I like? I know I wouldn't want a great sense of smell with a litter box in the house. Or hearing in case I hear something I wish I hadn't! Invisible might be good, as long as I can stop when I want. LOL! Really, though, I think I'd like to fly. :-)

Oh, the Six Million Dollar Man! I remember a sign by one of the dolls in a store: Six Million Dollar Man - One dollar off! LOL!
Now they'd probably jump to the moon.
I have to say, I do admire someone who can set their imagination loose in this way, Barbara. And think of the world in a new way.
Lisa - I loved both Wonder Woman and the Bionic Woman, and thinking of it now, I realize how different they were - Wonder Woman very flashy, and the Bionic Woman far more reserved, so to speak. But both great heroines!
Paula - LOL. Another superhero show I really like is one of the old British sitcoms. I forget what it's called, but it's about a superhero and his long-suffering wife. Tons of fun.
I really find this cover and the blurb intriguing. A must read for me.
