                                       Making the Paranormal Seem Normal

When I first started writing my werewolf series, I wanted to create a world that was as realistic as possible. No monster beast-like wolves when the werewolves shapeshifted into the wolf. No werewolves who couldn’t remember their human half when they turned into the wolf. As humans, they don’t forget their wolf roots either.

So what better way to create werewolves than to make them like real wolves when they’re wolves, only they have human sensibilities along with their wolf instincts? And when they’re human, they still have their wolf instincts and inclinations?

I love fantasy, and I love true stories, so that’s what I tried to combine, the fantastical with the world as we know it.

Who couldn’t use a little magic and a lot of wolf in their lives???

Now, to create a world like that, I had to leave out all the other fantastical creatures I love so much—the fae, vampires, other kinds of shifters, and a whole realm of mythical creatures I grew up with. But that’s okay. Because I wanted to enjoy the wolf as a wolf, like I did when reading Jack London’s Call of the Wild and White Fang. But I wanted a werewolf who was a hunky kind of guy, not a mindless beast who forgot he was part human when he was in his monster wolf form.

I also wanted a society of long-lived werewolves, like vampires in my vampire stories. And I wanted them to love who they are, not that they are cursed, or that becoming the wolf is a death-defying experience. It’s natural as nature intended. They’re comfortable in both their human skin and fur coats. They are who they are.

So why do they live in secret? It’s the whole thing of the fountain-of-youth scenario. The notions scientists would be doing a lot of poking and prodding. The lab experiments. That werewolves would be treated as freaks of nature, cursed, genetic mutants, or diseased. So they remain secretive about their roots.

In each of the books, which are stand-alone titles, I try to showcase different aspects of what being werewolf means. In the case of Seduced by the Wolf (in stores this month!), both Leidolf Wildhaven and Cassie Roux are red werewolves, but she’s a wolf biologist , and he has the unusual occupation of being a rancher, taking on the wolf pack of the former pack leader. But I’ve also introduced an omega wolf, or werewolf, and his role in the pack. And why he’s an omega wolf in the first place.

In other books, Heart of the Wolf (Book 1) and Destiny of the Wolf (Book 2), the gray wolf heroes fall for a red wolf heroine. In To Tempt the Wolf (Book 3) Hunter Greymere is hooked on a human woman, who isn’t quite what she seems, and in Legend of the White Wolf (Book 4), neither Cameron Macpherson or Faith O’Malley are werewolves in the beginning, but they soon find out not all wolves are the same. In Wolf Fever (Book 6; in stores December 2010), Carol Wood is fighting with her psychic visions and with the changes brought on by being a newly turned wolf. So the paranormal aspect of the stories is that it’s really not PARA Normal at all, but PERFECTLY normal. At least for the werewolf kind!

There are more to come also. Did you know that there are hunky Highland werewolf clans, and even a Spanish conquistador made his claim to a family from Spain, who makes an appearance in Heart of the Highland Wolf, (Book 7, Spring 2011), coming in Jun 2011. And Jake Silver, brother to Darien in Destiny of the Wolf, falls for a human woman (Dreaming of the Wolf, Book 8, Fall 2011), and dream mates with her, when this cannot possibly happen.

So if you’re looking for a wolfish adventure, or have been following the series, come see what’s new when Leidolf Wildhaven, who’s been in the first four books up until now, struts his stuff in front of the little red wolf biologist in an attempt to seduce her into his life. Or is it really Cassie Roux, who is doing the seducing? Maybe a whole lot of both!

Thanks so much for having me once again, Lynda! It’s always a pleasure.

My question to readers: Have you ever read a book where the author teased you with the paranormal, but then never delivered? What do you think about werewolves being real? Want one for your very own?

Thanks for dropping by!!

Terry

SEDUCED BY THE WOLF
BY TERRY SPEAR – IN STORES AUGUST 2010

His first priority is to protect his pack…

Werewolf pack leader Leidolf Wildhaven has just taken over a demoralized pack. With rogue wolves on the loose causing havoc and the authorities from the zoo suddenly zeroing in on the local wolf population, the last thing he needs in his territory is a do-gooder female, no matter how beautiful and enticing she is…
She’ll do anything to help wolves…

Biologist Cassie Roux has dedicated her life to protecting wolves in the wild. On a desperate mission to help a she-wolf with newborn pups, the last thing Cassie needs right now is a nosy and entirely too attractive werewolf pack leader trying to track her down…

With rogue wolves and hunters threatening at every turn, Cassie and Leidolf may find their attraction the most dangerous force of all…

Hi Terry & Lynda!

Do I believe werewolves actually exist? Til you see one for yourself guess you just have to believe what you've been told-that they do. And your books sure make me think they're out there somewhere!

One of my own? Hmmm....do they get along with cats? Otherwise I might have to pass. The hunky human form, well definitely want one of those!

Haven't read alot of paranormal books but those I've read have delivered and hope I never pick one up that doesn't! What a waste of time!

Terrific interview btw!

Terry Spear said...

Thanks!! Yes, Cat, you just keep telling yourself, "I do believe, I do believe, I do, I do, I do." Anything can happen! :)

Oh yes, wolves can have cat pals. Absolutely. Whatever they're raised with, they can grow to love. :) In Wolf Fever, Carol is worried about this very thing though. :) She owns a cat. :)

Hi Terry & everyone! It's really hard to get a picture of Wookie (she's camera shy and FAST, lol) However, I did manage to snap a pic of her a few years ago hiding behind the Christmas tree. You can see it on my website http://www.lyndakscott.com

And I had a review of SEDUCED BY THE WOLF but it didn't post. Mmm. I need to find out why.

Checked out Wookie Lynda...the look on (his/her?) face is 'You found me??? How dare you invade my privacy!' Beautiful cat tho!

Terry, so glad your wolves are so much nicer than those on True Blood! They give wolves a bad name hehe...

Glad to hear my cats would be safe...so bring on those wolves!!!

Fun interview, Terry! Fun premise and I totally agree. When you write anything, you have to write it like you believe it or the reader won't believe. I remember how surprised when my time travel book got tagged paranormal. I was like, what? I had to remind myself that time travel isn't normal--yet. lol

Lori said...

I don't know if I believe werewolves exist, but, I do believe that there are cultures where they believe in something simular. Wolf Spirits, shpeshifters, Wendigos, etc...I truely believe that legends and myths stem from a grains of truth.

Lori said...

*pokes* Umm...do you have a specific email address for us? Or did I completely miss it?

Lynda K. Scott said...

Well, yes, you would need my email addy, wouldn't you? (Shaking head at self)

Please email me at lynda@lyndakscott.com and please put Seduce in the subject line with your snail mail address in the body.

Thanks!

I'm at work, so don't have time to check out your cat, Lynda, will do when I get home tonight. Lunch hour is horribly too short.

Oh, yes, Cat, definitely, my wolves are nicer. Unless they're the bad guys. :) And I'm bringing on the wolves!!! :)

Pauline, what??? Time travels are considered paranormal? Since when??? I thought it was a proven fact that... Oh, well, all right, some folks have to have things verified to the nth degree before they'll believe this stuff is perfectly normal rather than paranormal!!! :)I LOVE time travels by the way!

Well said, Lori. I believe there were dragons of some kind in them thar hills. Why else would cultures around the world believe in them otherwise? :)

I've never been to disappointed by my paranormal authors. You know I believe in werewolves. And I've seen alot of real wolves in Minnesota. And look at them and think. What a spirited and awesome animal. And that's why I love your writing because you do make them feel normal and real. I'd like to actually have a chance to dream mate with one. Just to experience it. And I want to hear that low Growl. And I'll purr with joy.

Hi Terry,

My DH and I are both fans of Jack London's wolves. But yours really do combine the human and wolf characteristics in a totally believable way.

My DH, who prefers vamp stories (P.N. Elrod) asked me one day if I'd rather be a werewolf or a vampire. I told him that if I could live in one of your werewolf worlds, either as or with one of the characters, there's no doubt I'd choose werewolf over vampire. If, however, I would have to be a werewolf like on Being Human, I'd have to forego the romance of the wolf because there is none.

Terry Spear said...

LOL, Donna, and whine...wolves who are intimate whine. LOL :) One of these days I've got to see your wolves!!!

Ah, Julie, thanks so much!!!Did I mention I saw The Wolfman with Anthony Hopkins? Yikes, talk about good for nothing, no redeeming qualities whatsoever werewolves. It made me sad. :( But my wolves would take you in in a heartbeat. They'd let your DH join the pack too, even though he's partial to vampires. :) They're just that good natured!!! :)

What a great post! I'm definitely going to have to check out your reads. They sound fantastic. :)

Terry Spear said...

Oh do, Maeve! They're fun, but based on real wolves, and full of mystery, romance, suspense, and subtle humor too. :) I hope you fall in love with them as much as I love writing them!

If anyone needs book marks or autographed book plates for your books, you can send me a SASE and I'll send them to you. :) Just email me. :)

Werewolves and ther Shiters need to exist, even if only in my wishes LOl

Great interview Terry and I love the descriptions of how your weres are--I look forward to reading the whole series.

My daughter is sitting by me whining that I *always* get to read the GOOD books first LOL.

Ruth M. said...

SHIFTERS!!!!! arg!!!! sorry, I meant to write shiFters!!!!

Blushing horrendously!!!!!

Terry Spear said...

LOL, Ruth!!! Thanks so much for being interested in the series! I have to share a story. A best selling author had read over her copy, copy editor, agent, editor, asst editor, you name it, everyone has read her story over numerous times trying to catch any glitches.

So at the last second the author sees where she says: She removed his shirt....

Only she'd left out the "r" in shirt....

As for you daughter not getting to read the good books first...too funny. One of my author friends complains because her daughter gets to read my books before she does. LOL :)

Thanks, Ruth! :)
