High School Magical
Were you popular in high school? Run with the athletes? A brilliant band member? What about a wannabe wiccan?
Well, my character, Paisley Barton was in a new town and a becoming a new student during her last couple years of high school and made it tough for her to fit in. So, she turned to the one other real social outcast who just so happened to be a powerful witch.
No, my story is not of the Young Adult variety but it does have an interesting back story that pays an important part in this book and will play an even bigger part in the sequel. So, it got me to thinking.
What would my life have been like in high school if I’d known the ways of magic—just like Paisley did. Just like all the characters in all the popular television shows and movies seem to have access to these days. From the Twilight characters to The Vampire Diaries…these teens have the means to work magical mojo all while deciding what to wear to the school dance and whether or not to tell yet another lie to their parents.
If only I’d had these magical means back in the day. What would it have meant for me?
Not having to study so hard. Not having to sweat it out during summer band camp? Not having to feel the embarrassment of a crush gone awry?
Or, would it have been just the opposite. Would having these secrets on the mystical side have made me the outcast? The odd girl with the dark eyeliner? The one that everyone was afraid to talk to or the spooky girl that no guy wanted to kiss for fear of turning into a frog?
I’m not really sure but I know that even if I could go back in time, I wouldn’t change anything about high school. I wasn’t all that popular but I was the one person who tried to view everyone as equals. I was friends with everyone from the most popular, breathtakingly beautiful girls to the most poverty stricken and broken home-broken hearted folks who always sat at a lunch table by themselves.
I once got into a fight with one of my friends because she didn’t want me to sit at a different lunch table with “those people”. I told her she was being ridiculous. They’re good people, just like us…they don’t have great looks or happy homes but they are still nice people. Unfortunately, that was the end of our friendship as she felt the need to no longer associate with someone (that would be me) who dared cross the invisible lines between social classes.
But I’m glad that I was this kind of person back then and I know it has made me the type of woman I am today. Maybe if I’d had magical powers back then, I would have turned the tables on the snobby crowd and made them the rejects for the day. Then again, maybe the negative karma they put forth back then has come back to haunt them later in life anyway.
What was life like for you in high school? What would you have changed if you’d had magical powers back then?
Thanks for hosting me today at Star Crossed Romance. Come join my clique. All are welcome!

Hi Kerri - great post, as always! I can see you as a the type to treat everyone as equals. A great trait!
High school would have been a lot easier with magical powers - or at least a better ability to memorize Chaucer, foreign languages, math theorems, etc. Still, if you have to work hard at something, it means more to you and tends to stick better. Still, I do admit that there were a couple of girls I would have loved to turn into toads! ;-)
Have a great day!

Hi, Keri and Lynda,
Certainly high school would be easier with magic powers. I believe teens love books where this is possible.

@Rebecca~You and me both, my friend. Although toads are a little too high class. xoxo, K.
@Jacqueline~Thanks for stopping by and for the comment. I know. I'm sure my 10 year old already wishes she had magical powers to that would clean her room for her! I can only imagine what she'll be like as a teen. Oh no! :-)
I would have been able to stop my brothers cornering any guy I went out with and them asking the guy if he kissed me! Would probably have enjoyed turning them into rats. LOL!
Hi Kerri - Loved the interview. I too would have loved to have been able to do all that stuff when I was a teen. Oh well, I lived :).
I agree, how can you not want to read a story where a wife turns her husband into a rat :)! Thank you so much.

@Pauline~I didn't have any brothers but I would have loved to have worked some voodoo on my big bossy sister! LOL Thanks for the comment.
@Victoria~Thank YOU for stopping by and the nice shout out about my book. Glad you could join us today. Hope to see you back on the tour again. :-)
Enjoyed the interview. Can think of a few times having magical powers would have come in handy in high school! Would have made school work easier for one thing.

Hi Kerri,
I wouldn't change a thing about high school, then again, I wouldn't go back either. The book sound great!
I knew I liked you, Kerri! We would have formed our own clique. I was never one of the beautiful people, the druggies, the athletes, or any group there was. Always a rebelatheart you know. I was a skinny nerd, which was very uncool. So I was shy too. But I wouldn't change it, because it has made me more kind-hearted to the outcast.
I like what you said about negative karma coming back. If only some of those lonely, struggling high schoolers knew that time will tell; all they have to do is wait for their 20-year high school reunion for an eye-opener!
LOL
P.S. I still don't like cliques. What would they do without each other? Hey, that'd be a good spell for a day!! hehehe
Would magic make high school or life itself any easier? It depends on the person. Kerri, nice post, and great outlook on things.
Thanks for sharing,
A.M. Burns
@Jean~Thanks for the comment. School work was never really hard for me but it was time consuming. Really cut down on my socialize on the phone time! LOL
@Linda~You've got that right! You wouldn't catch me back there for any reason. Thanks for stopping by!
@Julie~Awe. I know we would've been friends. Some people are just drawn to each other. I heart Julie! Thanks for the comment. Always good to hear from you. xo
@AMBurns~Thank you for the lovely comment and shout out for my book. Hope you'll get a chance to check it out soon.

@desi~I know what you mean. I've always been a book worm myself. I wasn't a big party girl in high school--too busy with other stuff. But you're right...the new generation is totally different.
Thanks for stopping by!
