Why Read Romance?

Why should you
read romance fiction? There are a number of good reasons. I’ll offer my own
opinion and let’s see if we agree.
Why do I read romances? I enjoy reading
books I can feel passionate about which equates to main characters who are
passionate people. I want to read a novel in which I truly care about those
main characters. For me, that means romantic fiction.
Don’t get me wrong, I like many
different kinds of fiction but enjoy most a novel with a happy ending. I hope
that doesn’t make me sound shallow. I suppose part of the reason I read is to
escape the hum-drum of everyday existence. I want to read a great love story
with characters I can care about. For instance, I love a good Regency because
the novels are often humorous as well as romantic. TEA LEAVES AND TAROT CARDS
could be called my tribute to that genre, although the novel is not merely a
formula book but rather my own take on historical romance with a paranormal
sensual twist.
I want to solve an exciting mystery
along with the fictional detectives. I also want to read a book with an
interesting, clever plot. I appreciate an intelligently written novel. But
without a good romance, for me a mystery novel falls flat. The three novels in
my Kim Reynolds series: THE INFERNO COLLECTION, THE DROWNING POOL, and THE
TRUTH SLEUTH are my tribute to mystery fiction. Of course, they are romantic
mysteries with a paranormal edge, the kind of fiction I most enjoy reading. Did
I mention I like to read romances that have a paranormal element? No? Pardon my
oversight.
Reading novels and short stories
gives me added perspective on life while providing me with inspiration to write
fiction. I recently completed a book of short stories entitled BEYOND THE BO
TREE which is now offered at a low cost as a Kindle book. It contains ten
romantic stories. Some are more realistic while others are fanciful. There’s a
good mix of stories which include a vampire romance, a Druid priestess at odds
with an archeologist, and a young woman who meets a Greek god in the garden of
an art gallery.
I believe a good book is one the
reader can enjoy. It should be one you just have to finish reading and it
should leave you feeling good, satisfied, emotionally and mentally enriched.
What sort of novels do you prefer
to read? What constitutes a good book in your opinion? Who are some of your
favorite authors? Are there any novels you would recommend to other readers?

Enjoyed your post Jacqueline. I like stories with characters who tell you why through either words, introspection, or deeds, instead of they are the way they are just because. A good book can hook me with realism no matter how far-fetched the storyline. Best luck!

Thanks for dropping by and commenting. I think you make an important point: if readers care about the characters, they continue reading because they want to know what's going to happen to those characters. And fiction is exactly that--it doesn't have to be realistic. But the characters do need to be vivid and connect with us as readers at both an emotional and intellectual level.

Jacquie, an interesting blog. I think we all care about characters, but too many times they are remote figures that just act out a story. It's wonderful to connect characters and story.

I so agree with you! People who don't read romances will make derogatory remarks about how the books are just bedroom/sex scenes. In reality, the novels have plots that develop meaningful relationships between interesting people.
Great post as always, Jacquie, and I know The Third Eye is a wonderful read. Although I mostly write mysteries, my very first publication, which I called a 'feminist' novel, was published as "a romance" by Ace Books! I always like a little romance in my mysteries, though not the bodice-ripping kind.

That term "bodice ripper" comes from the 1970's when the sex scenes really lacked finesse. Much more sensual these days. Although some might argue with me about that regarding erotic versus romantic.

I've gotten hooked on the Pennyfoot Hotel mysteries by Kate Kingsbury. I've read six so far on my Kindle. They take place in early 20th century England. Good mysteries, with some romance. Very light, a lot of fun.

I feel exactly as you do in many respects. I like to read romance for the character depth and the happy endings. I like romantic mysteries to follow along with the sleuth and feel engaged in her life. In any genre, a romantic subplot is welcome and often the romance drives the story. If you want fear and grief, read the newspaper instead.

I couldn't agree more about why we read (and write) romance. I love happy endings too, maybe because real life often doesn't provide those happy endings. And I don't think that's shallow, it's simply a need for an uplifting story.
