Guilty Pleasures
As a lifelong SFF&P fan, I get a lot of strange looks from ‘regular’ people when I talk about the books, movies and TV shows I love. While it’s not unusual to be a Lord of the Rings fan or to admit that you love Star Wars, I’ve found that if you’re a self-proclaimed Trekker, Gater, Whovian etc. people tend to give you sidelong glances.I learned long ago just to shrug it off. I’m not ashamed to say I own every season of Angel and Stargate SG-1 on DVD or that I read Alan Dean Foster’s ‘Splinter of the Mind’s Eye’ ten times. [That’s the very first Star Wars follow-on novel, written back when nobody even knew Luke and Leia were brother and sister.]
I met my husband at a Star Trek convention and yes, he’s put my name in the yearly ‘Get in the Gate’ sweepstakes to win a walk-on role on Stargate. [I’d faint dead away if I won!] We’ve kicked around the idea of building a Stargate [just a small one of course] in our garden, and my idea of a great Friday night is three hours of the sci-fi channel and a bowl of popcorn.
I’ll never forget a conversation I had with a friend of mine about favorite movies. I told her my husband had just bought me my all time favorite movie on DVD. She tried to guess what it was – Gone with the Wind? Titanic [close second, btw], It’s a Wonderful Life? She almost fell over when I told her it was ‘Buckaroo Banzai.’ You can’t beat science fiction adventure. You just can’t.
After 39 years in sci-fi, fantasy and paranormal fandom, I’m used to the reactions. I know I’m from another planet. And I plan to go back there some day.
What about you? What are your guilty SFF&P pleasures?

OMG! I finally found someone who read "Splinter of the Mind's Eye"! I love that book. I read it when I was a teenager and I still have it. It's in complete tatters it's been read so much. So I admit to being a Star Wars fan (like half the world!).
When the original Battlestar Galactica came out (in the 80s) I kept a scrapbook on the series with pictures cut out of TV guides (I didn't know about fandom then!). The new one is showing on cable, but as I don't subscribe I haven't watched it yet, though my brother raves about it.
My fave SF series at the moment is Firefly. I bought it on DVD, and keep re-watching it endlessly. It's the first SF series that made me actively seek out fan forums.
That's three of us who loved 'Splinter of the Mind's Eye'! I don't know how many times I read that and, boy, was I disappointed that Luke and Leia turned out to be siblings. Though, that would have left Han out in the cold...unless we did a menage a trois? (waggling eyebrows and LOL)
Cassandra, I did the same thing with Star Trek, the TV series, but not a scrapebook, more a story board. Every picture I could find of Spock, Kirk, McCoy or any other crewmember went on there. I was a Trekkie before the term was invented, LOL
And the current Battlestar Galactica is my absolute favorite. It's like the Holy Hour here when that's on--no talking, no letting the dog out (until a commercial comes on), no nothing except immersing myself in the show.
OMG! I can't believe I'm not the only one who actually read Splinter! And it was the Luke/Leia relationship that kept me coming back.[Shakes head. Who knew?] The original Battlestar was a favorite too - and I kept scrapbooks also with little pictures of everyone, not to mention the posters on my walls. I had so many Trek and BG novels my book shelves collapsed.
It's nice to find kindred spirits!
I've read Splinter in the Mind's Eye enough times that I wore it out and tossed it because the spine broke! Man, that has been a long, long time.
I loved the original Battlestar. But, I feel like watching TV so seldomly that I still haven't seen the new one yet.
I like the whacky movies too like Buckaroo Banzai, Spaceballs, those kind of goofy sci-fi.
Some of my favorite books are Pern books, and Edgar Rice Borrough's Mars series. But I haven't read them forever and I never read them ragged. Well the ERB books I read were first edition, a friend's father collection them, so they were ragged to begin with and I had to be careful!
I was a devoted DS9 fan and almost had convulsions when they went off the air. I still long for the day when they make a DS9 movie. The X-Files were also a big, big favorite along with Farscape...gotta love that Creighton. Now I'm on to bigger and better things with Battlestar Galactica. I'm actually having DT's waiting for October to roll around. How could the producers be so cruel as to make us wait? As for books, I've been a long time fan of Anne McCaffrey and Marion Zimmer Bradley. There is just something about crossing the line between fantasy and sci-fi and throwing a spark of romance into the mix to get me to take notice. I read a book by Stephen Douglas, I think it was about the "Mirror of her Dreams" - it was an older novel about a woman who falls through a mirror and inside this alternate universe were other mirrors where you could see more alternate realities. That was good, too. As for paranormal, I've been a Dean Koontz fan for over 20 years. To me, he's the king of paranormal. Though most of the time he's mislabled in bookstores as horror.
I went to my first Star Trek convention the first year I lived in NJ. It was held that the Atlantic City Convention Center and it was so cool to look up and see the security guards dressed as Klingons patroling the place.
