Putting the Fantasy in Romance

I never considered fantasy creatures for romantic leads until I saw The Lord of the Rings trilogy.  My daughter was in her early teens when Return of the King was released on DVD.  She and her best friend spent hours watching the movie, stopping it whenever Legolas showed up.  With remote control in hand, they would click the movie ahead one frame at a time, giggling with infatuation.

Until then, elves and high fantasy creatures didn’t hold much interest for me.  I’d take vampires and werewolves any day.

But gradually Legolas won me over.  His long hair and cool demeanor when facing overwhelming odds didn’t hurt.  I also started reading more books with Fae creatures set in our world.  Faeries, elves, water sprites, trolls, selkies, and dragons the list of fantasy creatures goes on and on.

I was hooked!

So when the opportunity came along to participate in the Paranormal Fight Club writing contest, I knew I wanted to write a fantasy romance set in our world.  The “what ifs” started churning, and one idea jumped out.

What if a top actress in Hollywood didn’t get her beauty from a plastic surgeon?  What if her irresistible looks came from her true Fae nature?

That’s when I realized the “creature” I would write was a Princess of Summerland, a faerie escaped across the veil into the human world to hide from her past.  Add in a troubled hero with noble intentions, and a villain who is willing to sacrifice his entire world to take back what he believes is his, and the story came alive.

Writing a fantasy romance opened the door to magic, beauty, and the opportunity to create a “world” where anything was possible.

My question to you is, do you read fantasy romance?  What types of magical creatures are your favorites to read/write about?  Are there any fantasy romance series out there that you love?

Thanks for reading and commenting!  I’ll be giving away a free PDF copy of my new eBook short, Across the Veil to one lucky commenter…  And a super thank you to Lynda and Star-Crossed Romance for the opportunity to be here today! J

Across the Veil

Princess Talia from Summerland has been hiding across the veil in the human world for the last five years.

Starring in a hit television show as human actress, Natalie Thurmont, her charmed new life is shattered when the past comes knocking on her door.

"Across the Veil" won Romance in the Backseat book review's Paranormal Fight Club short story contest.

Ohhhh, Legolas! No question the movie boosted his hotness factor. LOL! I'd read the book numerous times and always like Aragorn, but after the movie?

Congrats on the win! The book sounds very fun and the cover is lovely. :-)

Lisa, I loved LK Hamilton's Fae series, so I'm sure I'll love this one just as much as soon as I have time to read again. :)

I love Lord of the Rings -- but I like Aragorn more than Legolas. I'm also a big Patricia Briggs fan. Also a fan of Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake series. I do like the weres more than the vampires.

And that scene with Legolas surfing down was amazing, wasn't it? LOL

I haven't written any elf heroes yet, but maybe someday?

HI Lisa,

I'm so excited about the release of your upcoming Night Series! Now you've got me thinking about fairies and elves, though, so you'll have to do a fairy or elf hero next. Oooh, or even a short story! Anything you write is a must-read for me!

Lisa,

Congratualtions on your new book deal...I'm excited to read your new series!!!

As for fantasy...I love it all. I've always gravitated toward time travel, dimensional hopping, otherworldy beings that want to right a wrong AND find their true love while saving the world (or at least their portion of the world).

Whether the beings are fae, demon, shifters, vampires, or some other creation, they ALL rock. For me, reading is about the journey.

I can't wait to read Across the Veil. Fae, magic, dimensional travel, hot hero, noble intentions...you've got my attention!

Hi Renee -

Your reading tastes sound like mine!!! LOL I read as an escape, so I love reading about worlds very different from my own...

I'm open to any type of paranormal creature as long as I can still relate to them and their struggles.

Hope you enjoy Across the Veil! Thanks for stopping by the blog!

Hi Lisa,
Great interview. Congrats on the four book deal! I didn't know you sang either. Very impressive. I do like fairies, but haven't read anything about them yet. I'll have to get a nook or kindle so I can check out yours.
Take care,
Karen

Hi, Lisa.
I remember you in the Fight Club thing....that was great fun.

I love romance, not so much HIGH fantasy romance, but more contemporary paranormal romance. It's fun to get lost in the characters and all the struggles they face to be with the one they love!!! :)

I'm stoked about your Entangled deal. We're going to see great things from you and Entangled, I can just feel it!!

Hi Lisa,
Congratulations on your book deal. I love fantasy romance and there are no creatures I will not read. Depending on the story one can fall in love with any creature.

Lisa , I too was enamored of Legolas in the movie! Geez. At my age! But I've always been an "OTHER" fan. Started writing about "others" when I was eight years old, and continued on to today with my Nocturne series of vamps and Weres.

Read Across the Veil last night - and it's super. So congrats on getting that up and running so that folks can read your books!
